JANUARY RELEASES
1911 - I love Jackie Chan, but don't suffer sub titles or
english dubbing very well. Pass.
50/50
Abduction - Not likely to bother with this one
Big Year, The
Bucky Larson: Born to be a Star - Nick Swardson is a great
addition to Sandler's movies, but can he hold his own in the lead? I don't
know. We'll see.
Catch .44
Contagion - Stephen King's made for TV, The Stand(1994), has
more entertainment value, but Contagion is still a watchable flick. If nothing
else it really hammers home the point of washing your DAMN hands. Especially
after crammin' 'em into the mouth of a freshly dead swine. Rent It.
Courageous - Waiting to watch this with my father.
Don't be Afraid of the Dark - It was nice of Tom to let the
girls out of the house long enough to film this movie, but I'll likely pass on
this one
Double, The - Out of sheer curiosity, will I watch this one.
Have you seen the trailer? Looks like it gives away WAY too much. So I'll
likely get around to it just to see if indeed the film offers more.
Dream House
Drive - Not necessarily for those who think this will be
along the fast and furious type film. More akin to the Transporter if anything,
with less hand to hand brawling. Great movie though, if you go in with an open
mind. The entire cast is awesome, and we get to see Ryan Gosling turn out a
tougher, more dangerous character then we're used to. But he owns it. I was
quite surprised by the some of the more violent scenes, as they sneak up on
you. For a lot of the flim, it's very quiet, little dialogue, then someone's
gettin' shot, cut or having their head stomped in. Good stuff. Definite rental.
I'll likely buy this one later
Guard, The - Yeah, If you like Brendan Gleeson
("Amish" from Braveheart) there's lots to enjoy here. Just watch it
with volume up, as the fast talkin' irish accents are sometimes hard to hear,
if you're say, watching the film and trying to be considerate to those who
might be sleeping.
I Don't Know How She Does It
Ides of March, The - I'm not much for political pictures.
Usually too convoluted and complicated for me too follow along. This was a
little different, a little more straightforward. Focusing on Ryan Gosling's
fall and rise during a political campaign. I have little intrest in politics,
I'm admittingly ignorant in most areas of govnm't. I don't even know the
difference between Democrats and Republicans. More to the point, I don't give a
shit. So maybe most of this movie's lost on me, but it's a good example of how
cutthroat politics are. And how your choices have repurcusions. Try it out.
In Time - A lot of films suffer from dialogue heavy scenes
of exposistion when trying to explain the plot's backstory to the audience.
This, by comparrison, was not such a film. In Time has an interesting premise,
using time as currency. Money is gone and society is still divided. The
"wealthy" have lots of time, and the "poor" do not. Quite
literly living for each minute. I would have liked more of back story explored,
as we're just thrown right in with not much explanation as to how this
happened. It's a minor point, I quess. The movie moves along fairly well, with
Justin Timberlake giving a fairly good performance in what is a markedly different
departure from his usual cameo's and Rom-Com roles. No one else stands out save
for Cillian Murphy. Who is also fine, but his age(35) makes he's character
stand out a little, as we are now genetically engineered to stop aging at 25.
Rent it. If you have the time (groan)
Killer Elite - Great trio of stars. I've been a fan of Clive
Owen since the Bourne Identity, And what the hell can I say about Mr. DeNiro
that hasn't already been said. Guy Ritchie introduced Jason Statham back in
'98. Now I like Jason in almost everything he's done. But I'm starting to
wonder if there's some kinda Skynet factory spittn' out statham clones. Let
your hair grow. Have a barber straight shave your face. Try an accent on for
size. The man looks the same in every DAMN film he's in. "I'm freakin' out
man"(said like the guy from the back seat of the cruiser in Super
Troopers). Good bloody movie though. True story too. Rent It.
Moneyball - At the time I write this the 2012 Oscars have
not aired. Both Brad and Jonah are up for awards. Brad I can see, his turn as
Oakland A's GM Billy Beane, is wonderful to watch. Jonah Hill though, Who I am
also a fan of, does nothing in my opinon to warrant an academy nod. It's his
first real dramatic breakaway from comedic roles, and while he does a fine job,
it isn't better than say, Will Ferrell's dramatic roles in Stranger than
Fiction and Everything Must Go. And honestly, given his baseball track record,
Kevin Costner shoulda played the A's GM. (right? right?) Rent It.
Paranormal Activity 3
Puncture
Real Steel - I watched this with my 4 yr. old son, and we
both enjoyed it. Rent It. Watch it with the kids.
Scorpion King 3 - Ha ha ha! I don't think so. I was done
with this franchise after the first one. Billy Zane having to resort to this
kinda shit is sad, but Ron Perlman can do better. For shame Ron, for shame.
Pass.
Shark Night
Thing, The - See my full review (above)
What's your number? - I watched this movie with my wife, and
the whole time I'm watching I'm envisioning myself pleasuring Anna Faris (whose
had my attention since Scary Movie 3). Blonde hair. Which I hardly feel bad
about, cause I know full damn well in my wife's mind she's being railed by the
(thanks to Capt. America) now huge Chris Evans. All's fair. Fun movie. Tired
formula, but it still works. Thanks to the easy chemistry between Anna and
Chris. Rent It.
February Releases
Very Harold and Kumar
Christmas - I love these movies. Great stoner flicks. But to be honest, as
funny as some of the movie was, "president Bush", from the last
entry, was their crowning achievement. That's gonna be tough to top. And it
hasn't happened yet. But hey, you can still get stupid and enjoy it!
Accidental Husband,
The
Anonymous
Fireflies in the
Garden
Hugo
J. Edgar (see
full review above)
Johnny English -
If you're a fan of Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean), you may laugh a few times, but
only a few. That about sums it up. Fans of Mr. Bean check it out, others need
not bother.
London Boulevard
Puss in Boots -
Not as funny as the first two Shreck's (Shreck 2 being my favorite) but fan's
of Antonio Banderas' animated pussy should enjoy this "prequel" to
the franchise. *this is the 5th time Antonio and Salma Hayek have worked
together.
Rum Diary, The -
It's watchable. Any fan of Depp should enjoy it. Personally I found Giovanni
Ribisi more entertaining. And, Amber Heard certainly ain't hard on the eyes.
Michael Risploi, Aaron Eckhart, and Richard ("Stop being a fucking
dinosaur and get a job!") Jenkins, round out the cast. (fans of Will Ferrell
know where that quote came from)
Texas Killing Fields
Tower Heist (see
full review)
Twilight Saga:
Breaking Dawn part 1 - Well I'm not a 13 yr. old girl, so I'll likely pass.
Part 2 better be the end of this shit.
